📋 Paper 1 Eligibility (Classes 1–5)

To appear for Paper 1, you need Senior Secondary (Class 12) with at least 50% marks, along with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) — completed or in the final year. There are equivalent routes too: a 4-year B.El.Ed, a 2-year Diploma in Special Education, or graduation plus a 2-year D.El.Ed. The percentage requirement has relaxations of up to 5% for reserved categories as per NCTE norms.

The key point most aspirants miss: a plain B.Ed alone also qualifies you for Paper 1 as per current NCTE notifications, though such candidates are typically required to complete a short bridge course after recruitment. If you hold a B.Ed and want to teach primary classes, you can appear.

📋 Paper 2 Eligibility (Classes 6–8)

For Paper 2, the standard route is graduation with at least 50% marks plus a B.Ed (completed or final year). Alternative routes include: graduation plus a 2-year D.El.Ed, Senior Secondary plus a 4-year B.El.Ed, or Senior Secondary plus a 4-year B.A/B.Sc.Ed integrated degree. Again, reserved categories get percentage relaxation per government norms.

When filling the Paper 2 application, you also choose your subject stream — Mathematics & Science or Social Studies — based on your graduation subjects. Choose the stream matching what you studied, as this determines the 60-mark subject section of your paper.

🎯 Should You Take One Paper or Both?

If you qualify for both papers, appearing for both in the same session is usually the smart move. It costs only a little extra in fees, both exams happen on the same day in different shifts, and the syllabus overlap is significant — CDP and both Languages are common to both papers, meaning roughly 90 of 150 marks of preparation is shared. Clearing both makes you eligible for Classes 1–8, doubling the teaching positions you can apply for. The only reason to take one paper is if you clearly qualify for only one, or you are certain about the level you want to teach.
